Resident Practitioner for Adolescent Literacy and Professional
Development
Job Description:
NASSP, with sponsorship from Prentice Hall and Pearson
Education Inc. seeks an outstanding, practicing secondary school principal to
serve two years as a "Resident Practitioner" focused on Adolescent Literacy and
Professional Development. The Resident Practitioner will have major
responsibility to NASSP while working with representatives from Prentice Hall.
The individual may be based in his or her home community or at NASSP in Reston,
Virginia. The Resident Practitioner’s salary will be paid by NASSP through the
local school district, which must commit to granting a leave of absence and
paying benefits. Candidates will need to demonstrate extensive experience in
dealing with Adolescent Literacy issues and an understanding of accountability.
Additional training in these areas will be provided by NASSP at the beginning of
the two-year assignment.
The Resident Practitioner (RP) will work with NASSP members
and affiliates nationwide around issues of Adolescent Literacy and Professional
Development as well as accountability as it relates to principals and secondary
schools. Specifically, the RP will:
- Work closely with NASSP affiliates to provide guidance into literacy,
reading and professional development.
- Represent NASSP and Prentice Hall’s organizations by conducting workshops
for groups of principals across the country on issues, topics, policies and
legislation regarding Adolescent Literacy and Professional Development at the
secondary school level.
- Serve as the practitioner content expert for both of NASSP AND PRENTICE
HALL, providing guidance for the creation of products, professional
development, tools and publications about Adolescent Literacy and Professional
Development that could become professional development activities for school
and district leaders.
- With the help of NASSP staff, develop, implement and evaluate an effective
web site for use in school staff development by superintendents and
principals.
- Give presentations for NASSP and Prentice Hall’s activities and work in
NASSP and Prentice Hall’s booths at national and state conventions to advise
principals on how to approach Adolescent Literacy in a way that enhances
student learning and achievement.
- Provide guidance to Prentice Hall in product development in respect to
literacy and professional development.
- Provide professional article for Teacher’s Materials in appropriate
Prentice Hall programs.
- Represent NASSP and Prentice Hall as the Literacy and Professional
Development Practitioner in the education community.
- Assist in literacy and professional development issues on the federal,
state and local level where appropriate.
The Resident Practitioner will spend a significant percentage
of time traveling in the field working with state affiliates and various
regional membership groups providing expert service and consultation.
Required Skills and Competencies:
- Must currently be a middle school or high school principal
- Must have proven success or experience implementing a literacy plan in
school.
- Must have experience and interest in Adolescent Literacy issues as they
pertain to principals and their schools
- Experience using technology
- Project management skills
- Effective writing skills
- Excellent presentation skills
