Pennsylvania Governor’s Institute for Early Childhood Educators:  Emergent Reading and Writing
July 20 to 25 2003

Juniata College

The 2003 Governor’s Institute for Early Childhood Educators at Juniata College is designed for educators who work with young children (pre-K to grade 3): early childhood teachers, principals, district administrators, preschool directors, early childhood professors, reading specialists, family literacy educators, special education teachers, children’s librarians and others who work with young children.

The Institute will increase participants’ knowledge and understanding of the Pennsylvania Academic Standards for Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening and the Pennsylvania Early Childhood Learning Continuum Indicators. Sessions will focus on the five essential elements of learning to read, early childhood assessment, the reading and writing connection and the reading and math connection.

Keynote speakers include:  Hans Wilhelm (author of over 150 children’s books, including I Will Always Love You and Bunny Trouble); Dr. Roland Good (developed the DIEBELS assessment); and Dr. Eileen Feldgus (author of Kid-Writing).

One hundred early childhood educators will be selected from across the Commonwealth to attend the Institute.  All costs are paid by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, including food, lodging, materials and two graduate credits (equivalent to 60 Act 48 hours). Participants will be housed in university apartments.
