(Harrisburg, PA)—More than 250 elementary and secondary school principals will convene in Reading for the tenth annual joint conference of the Pennsylvania Associations of Elementary and Secondary School Principals (PAESSP) to be held October 20-22, 2002, at the Sheraton Reading Hotel.

Sen. Robert J. Mellow, Democratic floor leader serving the 22nd senatorial district, has been selected to receive the PAESSP’s prestigious Educational Excellence Award. The honor is given annually to a citizen of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania who has made significant contributions to the attainment of education excellence in the state’s elementary and secondary schools. Sen. Mellow has demonstrated a sincere commitment to the quality of public education in the Commonwealth.

In addition to the more than 70 vendors exhibiting their wares for schools and classrooms, a multitude of professional and informational breakout sessions and keynote addresses will be presented to attendees during the three-day conference. Dr. Kevin McHugh, principal at Pennwood Middle School in Yardley, Pa., and the 2002 MetLife/NASSP National Middle Level Principal of the Year, will discuss, “Leadership Essentials for Principals.”

Ian Jukes has been a teacher, an administrator, consultant, writer, university instructor and keynote speaker. His focus has been on the compelling need to restructure our institutions so that they become relevant to the current and future needs of children. In his keynote address, “Living on the Future Edge,” he will trace the amazing continuum of development from the building based computers of yesterday to the astounding digital wonders of today.

John P. Covey is a senior consultant with the Franklin Covey Company, the world’s premier time management and leadership development authority. In his keynote address, “What Matters Most to Educators,” Franklin Covey’s time management training workshop, he will help those present to uncover the timeless principles that govern a balanced life.

Elliot Y. Merenbloom served as a classroom teacher, guidance counselor, assistant principal, principal, director of middle school instruction and area director. He retired after 33 years of service from the Baltimore County (Md.) Public Schools. He is now an educational consultant, and he will speak on “Organizing School for Effective Instruction.”

Finally, in the fifth general session, Donna S. Weldon, Esq., PAESSP chief counsel, and Ann McGee Carbon, Esq., PAESSP assistant chief counsel, will speak on “What’s Happening In the Law” as it pertains to public education.
