PENNSYLVANIA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AWARDS $10.5 MILLION TO DISTRICTS AND SCHOOLS FOR TECHNOLOGY INITIATIVES

   Sixty-seven Pennsylvania school districts and charter schools across 39 counties will receive a total of $10.5 million to improve the integration of technology into schools and to boost student academic achievement, said Secretary of Education Vicki L. Phillips

   The Pennsylvania Department of Education recently announced the LEA grant recipients of the 2004-05 competitive funds under Title II, Part D (Enhancing Education Through Technology) of the No Child Left Behind Act.

   Eligibility was based on LEAs with both the highest percentages of low-income families and the greatest need for assistance in acquiring and integrating technology into the classroom. The PDE used a peer review process to judge applications. The allocations will fund the first year of the two-year projects.

   The grant program criteria were developed in conjunction with Pathways to Performance, the PDE's vision for education and technology. The grants will address the most pressing needs identified by the 2003 Pennsylvania Technology Inventory Survey (PATI).
