PA Schools Named National Blue Ribbon Winners
On
behalf of Gov. Tom Ridge, Acting Secretary of Education Charles B. Zogby
congratulated 17 Pennsylvania elementary schools named 2000-01 U.S. Department
of Education National Blue Ribbon Schools. Fourteen Pennsylvania public schools
and three private schools are among
Twenty
public elementary schools from across the Commonwealth were nominated by a panel
of teachers, school administrators and Pennsylvania Department of Education
representatives. The Council for
American Private Education nominated private schools.
Schools
selected for recognition each have conducted a thorough self-evaluation
involving administrators, teachers, students, parents and community
representatives as part of the application process. The process included
assessing individual strengths and weaknesses and developing strategic plans for
the future development of the school.

National Blue Ribbon Schools Program was established in 1982 to recognize
schools that attain excellence in teaching and instruction, student achievement,
leadership, and parental involvement. Elementary and secondary schools are
nominated in alternating years. Middle schools participate in the recognition
program during the same year as high schools.
