UPCOMING MEDIA LITERACY SEMINAR
Drug Free Pennsylvania announces its full-day media literacy seminar on Friday, January 30, 2004 at Temple University’s Fort Washington Campus and on Friday, February 6, 2004 at the Capital Area Intermediate Unit in Enola.
The seminar is available to all educators, however, it is especially designed for middle school teachers who want to implement a media literacy curriculum focused on substance abuse in their classroom. One of the leading experts on media literacy, Dr. Renee Hobbs, the director of the Media Education Lab at Temple University in Philadelphia and co-founder of the Alliance for a Media Literate America (AMLA) will be the main speaker.
The training will include:
· An introduction to media literacy.
· An overview of consumer culture and public health.
· A hands-on deconstruction of print and broadcast advertisements with an emphasis on process.
· Assessing vocabulary related to techniques, technologies and institutions involved in media production.
· Applying key concepts of media education and communication technologies to the use and production of student media messages.
Registration is at 8 a.m. and the seminar runs from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The cost is $99 or $69 each for two or more teachers from the same school district. Tuition includes meals, a teacher manual, Act 48 credit submission and The Media Straight Up! curriculum.
