1) Carl Beard, Esq., presented the "School Law Update" at the First General Session.
2) Dr. Douglas
Reeves, the chairman and founder of the Center for Performance Assessment, an
organization dedicated to improving student achievement by improving the
knowledge and skills of educators and school leaders, presented "Standards and
Accountability for Individual Student Progress," at the Second General Session.
3) Jamie Vollmer, a former corporate CEO and attorney who now works to
help increase community support for America's schools and build professional
pride among educators, presented his motivational message, "You Cannot Do It
Alone," at the Third General Session.
Awards were presented to the recipients during PAESSP's
Opening Luncheon/Awards Ceremony on Sunday, October 19, 2003, except for the
PAESSP Educational Excellence Award, which was presented to Dr. Paula Hess,
during the Annual Banquet on Monday, October 20, 2003.
1) Robert Carroll (seated at right), a volunteer at the Sara Lindemuth Elementary School in Susquehanna Township School District, received
the 2003 PAESP/MetLife Service to Children Award during the Awards Luncheon. The
award was presented to Mr. Carroll by Joseph J. Foriska, PAESSP president-elect,
and Jonathan Tyler, financial service representative for MetLife Resources
(center - standing).
2) From left to right: Brian L. Cashman, Sr., PASSP award committee chair, presented the Pennsylvania Principal of the Year Award to Dr. A. Joseph Jennelle, principal of Central Bucks High School East, Doylestown, Pa. Dr. Jennelle was selected as the high school principal of the year for Pennsylvania in the MetLife/NASSP Principal of the Year Program.
3) From left to right: Brian L. Cashman Sr., PASSP award committee chair, presented the Pennsylvania Principal of the Year Award to Joy F. Kurtz, principal of New Hope-Solebury Middle School in New Hope, Pa. Mrs. Kurtz was selected as the middle level principal of the year for Pennsylvania in the MetLife/NASSP Principal of the Year Program.
4) From left to right: Lori A. Dixon, assistant principal at Hershey Middle School in Hershey, Pa., was selected as the PASSP/NASSP Assistant Principal of the Year for 2003. David Bieri, former PASSP Assistant Principal at Large, presented the award to Mrs. Dixon.
5) From left to right: Dr. Tawn Ketterman, PAESP Mini Grant Award chair, presented the Mini Grant Award to Dr. George Giovanis, principal of Washington Elementary School, Boyertown Area School District, for the "Outdoor Classroom" program.
6) From l to r: Dr. Tawn Ketterman presented the second Mini Grant Award to Shawna Grim, assistant principal at Dubois Area Middle School in the Dubois Area School District, for the "Stepping Up to Bat(s): A Natural Solution to Controlling Disease Carrying Mosquitoes" program.
7) At the opening luncheon award ceremony, four PASSP Lincoln Investment Planning, Inc. Community Service Grant Awards were presented. Pictured from left to right at podium: Harry Beil, principal of Slippery Rock Area High School, Slippery Rock Area School District, received a grant from Bob Schiller of Lincoln Investment Planning, Inc. for the "Tranquility Garden."
8) Pictured from left to right: Joseph J. Foriska, PAESSP president-elect, presented the 2003 PAESP/NAESP National Distinguished Principal Award for Pennsylvania to Barbara A. Rudiak, Ph.D., principal of Phillips Elementary School in the Pittsburgh Public Schools.
9) Pictured from left to right: Robert Eichensehr, NASSP coordinator for PASSP, presented the prestigious PASSP Joseph Mamana Meritorious Service Award to Frank P. Galicki, principal of Dallas High School in the Dallas School District.

11) Paula K. Hess, D.Ed., senior advisor to
the Speaker of the House and the Majority Leader in the Pennsylvania House of
Representatives, received the prestigious Educational Excellence Award for 2003
at the Annual PAESSP Banquet on October 20, 2003. Pictured from left to right:

1) Colleen Pavlovec, assistant principal (pictured), Richard Schwartzman, principal, and Josh Doll, assistant principal, at Elizabethtown Middle School presented the well-attended breakout session, "Fresh Ideas Start Here - Get Hooked!"
2) Seated in front of the room from l to r are: Tom Sigafoos, NAESP representative; Robert Eichensehr, NASSP coordinator; and Joseph J. Foriska, PAESSP president-elect. They presented a breakout session on "How to Get Involved in Your Principals' Association."
3) Dr. Kimberly Hamilton, curriculum director, and Cal Barto, principal, both of Muncy School District, presented a breakout session on "Differentiated Supervision."
4) Myles Shiroma of Premier - A School Specialty Company presented a lively breakout session, "Student Success: Powered by the Seven Habits."
1) Robert F. Baker, the Region III Representative for U.S. Secretary of Education, Rod Paige, brought greetings from the Secretary to banquet attendees. The Region III offices are located in Philadelphia.
2) From left to right: Dr. David C. Pietro and Marshall J. Wagner were honored as the outgoing PAESP and PASSP presidents for 2002-03, respectively.
3) Dr. Paula Hess (center) was honored as the 2003 PAESSP Educational Excellence Award recipient at the Annual Banquet. She was presented with the award by Dr. David C. Pietro (left), PAESP immediate past president, and Marshall J. Wagner, (right), PASSP immediate past president.
Miscellaneous Conference Photos:
1) The Hollywood Band performed following a very successful and entertaining Casino Night on Sunday, October 19, 2003.
2) Frank Galicki, principal at Dallas Senior High School and PAESSP Alternative Funding Committee co-chair, performed with the Hollywood Band.
3) From l to r: Rosie Young, NAESP president-elect; Tom Sigafoos, NAESP representative; and Bonnie Tryon, NAESP Zone II director, took some time out at the NAESP Bookstore (new this year to the conference) to pose for a quick picture.
4) At podium from left to right: Robert Eichensehr, NASSP coordinator, presented Keith Taton, Ed.D., NASSP president, with a PASSP life membership, a membership certificate and pin at the opening luncheon and awards ceremony.
5) Michael Latusek (far right), assistant superintendent of Bethel Park School District, won the top door prize at the closing of the PAESSP Conference -- an overnight stay for two at the Sheraton Station Square Hotel in Pittsburgh. Conference chair, Deb Weaver, and Hospitality Committee co-chair, Becky Harbaugh, presented him with the "grand" prize.
6) Pictured from left to right: On October 21, 2003, association history was made when 2002-03 PAESP President Dr. David C. Pietro and 2002-03 PASSP President Marshall J. Wagner ‘passed the gavel’ to Dr. Ronald W. Dufalla at the Annual Business Meeting during the PAESSP State Conference. Dr. Dufalla, principal of Brentwood Senior High School in Pittsburgh, is the first president of the newly-consolidated Pennsylvania Association of Elementary and Secondary School Principals (PAESSP) . Richard L. Shockey, former PASSP treasurer, is sitting on the far right.
